Not sure why, but I didn't have a problem with it. I thought it was very powerful. I agree it was definitely going out on a limb.
If you think about it, all NIKE ads ever really push are images as opposed to products. I can't think of the last NIKE ad I've seen where an actual product was being advertised, just a person and their image.
So, if you think of it like that, I could see how helping Tiger repair his image ultimately helps NIKE (seems obvious, I know). Nice touch with the black and white, too; artistic and let you know it wasn't a joke.
