Q: Should the hands be ahead of the ball at address ? (especially for short irons).

Seems like this photo is promoting your hands be just inside your left thigh on all the clubs.
If that is the case, you hands are:

Quote:
slightly ahead of the ball (in middle of stance) on short irons.
in line with ball on mid irons.
behind the ball on long irons.
further behind the ball with the driver.

I think I setup with my hands too far forward at address for the pitching wedge, sand wedge. And that might pull the club too inside.

Thoughts ?

IMO.... these type of setups cause a beginner/novice to hit the ground behind the ball More consistently and also to flip at and through impact. Take a look down the line of any range, and you'll see this over and over. Again IMO ppl hit behind the ball because their weight gets stuck on the back leg and the shift that caused them got get there changed the swing arc..... dog chasing its tale !!

Why?

I think the main reason people hit behind the ball is poor weight shift (as you said), but I don't think ball position is the main culprit of a poor weight shift. I guess if you are playing the ball REALLY far back in your stance, then fine. But I don't see that as much as I see people simply NOT shift the weight and just swing with the arms.

I think SOME forward press actually helps people hit down on the ball.

My hands and the ball are in the exact same position on every shot except my driver and some speciality shots. Only thing that changes is the width of my stance. But for every single shot I hit, I try to get 100% of my weight onto my left foot BEFORE impact. It doesn't happen, but I try to make it happen.

A good wrist cock really helped me hit down on the ball.

I wonder if the forward press might encourage someone who pulls the club inside on the backswing to pull it further under the plane ?

Absolutely agree with hands in the same place, just off the left thigh. The ball placement and stance width is the only thing that really changes.

It helps to reproduce the same swing. You have to remember that your BODY is the swing, the club is the object BEING swung. The club is NOT "the swing". So what must be repeated is the swing you make with your BODY. The club and ball placement can be changed to manipulate ball flight and contact. Generally that's ball middle of your stance to just slightly forward of middle for your irons, and ball right under your left shoulder for your Tee'd up shots.

Need A Swing Analysis?

random,

I guess i should have been more specific... what i was referring to was the pictured upper body setup... my point is that i have seen a lot of ppl setup with their weight back and it never transfers through, so to setup this way and not have a good shift in the first place is where they have problems.

when thye talk abt short-irons. does it mean that its a pw to lob wedge or 9 to lobwedge? and hte mid irons would be 6-8 and long iron and fairway woods 5-3? but this def is a good guideline in ball placement.
